Express Entry, explained in plain language

Express Entry is not a visa. It is the online system Canada uses to manage applications for its three main federal economic programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class.

You create a profile, and your age, education, language test results and work experience are converted into a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Every few weeks, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada holds a draw and invites the highest-scoring profiles to apply for permanent residence.

Because draws select from the top of the pool, the practical question is never "can I enter the pool?" but "is my score competitive?". Language results are the fastest lever for most people: strong test scores can be worth more points than an additional degree. A provincial nomination adds 600 points, which in practice guarantees an invitation.

An honest assessment therefore starts with your score today, then maps what would change it: retaking a language test, having foreign education assessed, a year of skilled work, or targeting a provincial stream built for your occupation.

What to remember

  • Express Entry manages three federal programs under one points system
  • Language scores are usually the fastest way to raise a CRS score
  • A provincial nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation
